Not all by any means, but many rural properties have a rubbish tip somewhere around the place. Many dumps are hidden from view and many property owners dispose of large metal objects in gullies to slow the flow of stormwater and thus lessen erosion damge. The dump here, though, is easily seen from the road.

One of the nice things about the sun rising later in autumn and winter mornings is that I’m out and about at that time of day. There’s something special, magical even, about the atmosphere created by the light, the mist and the stillness.

Today, as an experiment, I present my images in sound rather than in photographs.

Today you must let your imagination do the work. You’ll hear bird calls, frogs, boots on gravel, boots on grassland, dogs bathing in roadside culvert, dogs eating breakfast, and more birdcalls.

To continue the images in sound theme, the sounds were all captured using my compact camera, a Nikon Coolpix 3700 – the very same camera that I normally use to take photographs on my morning walks.

This audio post attempts to tie up those photographic loose ends before the end of the year. Next year will bring a new telephoto zoom lens and with it, I hope, a fresh eye on old and new subject material.

At last, the terrestrial Hyacinth Orchids are beginning to flower.

An audioBlog accompanies these photographs [4.8 Mbytes, 9 min 43 sec duration].

The Dipodium have been growing slowly over the past several weeks. Now the flowers are beginning to emerge (those that haven’t been nipped off by rabbits or hares).

There are many more “Lady’s Slipper” violets, the Hybanthus monopetalus, than in previous years. Whether this is due to climatic conditions, or just less predators (cattle or whatever), I know not.

Now that this green-stalked hyacinth orchid is beginning to flower, it might be easier to identify. I now think it may be Dipodium pulchellum rather than the Dipodium variegatum which I had previously identified it as.

Funghi growing on a dead tree branch that’s lying on the ground. Not difficult to miss given the bright orange colour.

These toy animals wait patiently for somebody to offer them a home.

It’s much easier to notice in 3 dimensions but these clumps of grass are hanging above the creek from fencewire. A recent flash flood has left the grass high and dry. The water level must have been pretty impressive for a short time. The topmost clump would be about 2m / 6ft above the current water level.

Interesting light plays in interesting clouds as the storm moves around.

A hole in the clouds highlights this hilltop. It stands out as a beacon amidst the darkness.

Only recently identified by me, this is Lomandra longifolia, the Spiny-headed Mat-rush.

An unidentifed plant just beginning to flower. It could be a weed – but then again, a weed is just a plant out of place

Straight lines (the walls) and ragged lines (the pavers and safety fence). The contrast caught my eye in a quirky moment.

Tattersalls Hotels (aka “Tatts”) framed by the new shade “sails” in the pedestrian mall.

Back in the countryside now, and a dunny (outdoor toilet) in the middle of the paddock. The old shearing shed is out of sight to the right.

This lizard stayed very still for me – no doubt assuming that if it didn’t move then I wouldn’t see it.

It’s that time – the feral goats are back on their journey through the area. Here they are in a neighbour’s paddock.
