Wot a lot o’ bottles

The bottle heap from the original Innamincka Hotel

The original hotel at Innamincka became known for the extremely large heap of discarded bottles strewn outside. This photograph shows the state of the heap of bottles today and can be compared with a photograph taken circa 1920.

The pamphlet (PDF, 1.6 Mbytes) on the Elizabeth Symon Nursing Home comments:

The Innamincka Hotel was famous for its huge bottle heap. Empty bottles were thrown on a pile that grew to be 200 metres long and 2 metres high. It is not known how wide the heap was.
