The rock and the goanna

Goanna below

This goanna was quite content to lie curled around a rock near the edge of the Macleay River. In recent trips I’ve mostly only seen them in trees so it was almost novel to find one on the ground. It being on the ground, of course, gave me the perfect opportunity to photograph this 1 metre long youngster from a different angle.

[... and no, it wasn't trapped under the rock. We checked.]

Growing on nothing

Tree growing from cliff face

Back into gorge country today above the Macleay River, and I was most impressed by the tree on the right-hand-side of the image which is apparently doing very well thank-you growing out of the cliff face. It has a strong root system gripping onto bare rock.
