Curious mist

20060629-001-Curiousmist

The patch of mist up on the hill caught my eye this morning. It looks like smoke more than anything else.

Mist usually sits in the creek beds and valleys - here it’s halfway up (or down) the hill. Out of view to the right is a very large mist mass (probably coming up from the Gara river a few kilometres away). I think what’s happening here is that some of the mist is slipping over a ridge or saddle from right to left in the field of view and ends up looking as we see it.

Thorny gollach

Black-thorn bush

A thorn of the Blackthorn bush (Bursaria spinosa). It’s about 1 cm (half an inch) long; the tiny lichen growing on it is what caught my eye.

I was thinking of the word “thorny and the title Thorny Gollach came to my mind (through word association). [A Horny Gollach is the NE-Scotland name for an earwig. Here's a poem about it (written in Scots of course)].
