You see here (at the bottom of the image) the optical fibre through which the web page you are now viewing started its 550km / 350 mile journey to Sydney (thence the world).

Larger than life, this macro image shows the sheath inside which is the micro fibre carrying a laser-generated light of wavelength 1550 nanometres. A bit picture of a little light.
