A Kooka

20040425-056-kooka.jpg

An Australian oven joke. Cooker == Kooka (short for Kookaburra – the bird)).

A previous owner of this property stored this old gas oven with cook-top with a view, perhaps, to using it himself. I imagine that somebody so-inclined could restore it. It’s a “Metters Early Kooka”.

    Hi,
I have a Metters Early Kooka 88 Gas Stove. 4 Burners. Steak plate and grill. Large oven and small plate warmer oven. White enamel.
In pretty good condition but hob gas burners are starting to rust and disintegrate!
We bought it reconditioned from an old store on Broadway/Parramatta road in Sydney, which is no longer there. So just wondering if any one knows where I might be able to get spares from or if there is a person who still collects/sells/reconditions these great stoves?
    Really appreciate any information.
    Thanks,
    Jon.

Hi Maureen, I am wondering if you still have that Metters Early Kooka – 88. I might be interested in buying it. Thank you

  21. Chris says:

Hello all, i have a Metters Early Kooka ‘The Kembla’, cream in color and in perfect condition with every part intact. It has also been converted to Natural Gas. We renovated our heritage apartment (circa 1930’s) in Mosman, Sydney during 2004 and did not require the Kooka – which has only had one home since new! It has been lovingly cleaned and securely stored until we find a person who is willing to pay what it’s worth.

And just for the curious folk, Mosman is the suburb in which SPRING, HENRY LANGDON (1864-1937) (one half of Metters Ltd) resided. Who knows, we could be living in his old place!

  22. David Teplitzky says:

    Can anybody help please?

I am looking for an old gas Kooka or similar that will take LPG. If not I need to locate a conversion kit. Does anyone know where I could find such things?

    • Steve H says:

I see a few people have asked about who might be able to restore or convert old Early Kookas in Sydney, but it doesn’t appear that there is anyone. With the demise of Bishop’s Stoves are we Kooka lovers now in the position of having to scavenge parts from other units and attempt to do it ourselves, or is there someone out there that might be able to help? Soecifically what I’m after is someone who can do an LPG conversion. Desperate.

      • Lex Brown says:

Steve….Did you have any success with this…I am in Brisbane and am trying to restore a domestic Radiation Regulo New World 345 oven and cooktop.

        AQny advice?

  27. Jackie says:

I have a Kembla which I use daily but recently had an issue with the oven door mechanism and now cannot get it to seal. Anyone had and fixed a similar problem and have any suggestions or know of a repairer/restorer?

  28. Tom says:

Jackie, I have just moved into a house with a Kembla which has the same problem as yours – the oven door sits slightly open. I have used an old belt to tie it shut but obviously that’s not ideal. Does yours have any sort of seal in the inside of the door? Mine looks like it has space for a seal, but there isn’t one there and reading the comments on this site it looks like parts must be very hard to find…

  29. Lynne says:

I am renovating a kitchen and need to know the dimensions of my Metters Gas cooker which is in storage elsewhere. I think it is an “88″ appears in catalogues around 1957. It is white enamel with four burners on R, larger Steak /grill burner on L, with warmer oven and main oven. I think it was 1.1m wide. Can anyone advise, please?
